Commemorating the distinguished battles of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment
During the First World War, our men fought as an equal member of the British Empire alongside Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Between 1915 and 1918, the Royal Newfoundland Regiment distinguished itself in a number of key First World War battles, earning several military honours. In September 1917, it became the only Regiment to receive the prefix “Royal” during the First World War, and it was only the third time in the history of the armies of the Bristish Empire that such an honour was granted, during hostilities.
Honour 100 is currently working with our stakeholders and partners, at home and abroad, to commemorate these key military battles with activities and events on and around the respective anniversary dates.
These include:
- Gallipoli, Turkey – September 19, 1915
- Battle of the Somme at Beaumont-Hamel – July 1, 1916
- Gueudecourt, France – October 12, 1916
- Monchy-le-Preux, France – April 14, 1917
- Masnières, France – November 20, 1917
- Courtrai/Kortrijk, Belgium – October 14, 1918
Watch our web and social media feeds for more information as we near these anniversaries.
